ResearcHDiscovery

Through two-way high-definition communication, research meets discovery. As a proof-of-concept for collaborative one-on-one research using 2-way high definition, this project connects multiple universities in the United States enabling researchers to work and innovate in new ways. Participants in the project collaborate with colleagues, mentors, and experts in their field of study. Topics range from basic research to advanced applications. kynamatrix is not directing the research subject matter.

More than just videoconferencing or distance learning, we believe this is the dawn of a new era in how we communicate.

The intention of the project is to allow researchers from participating universities to collaborate face-to-face on new or existing multidisciplinary projects.

The project is sponsored by kynamatrix Research Network, LifeSize Communications, and GBH Communications.

For background information on this project read the FAQ (pdf).

Project Status
The status of the project is listed below:

2007.04.24
All installations are complete, the ribbons are cut, and all participating universities now have a high definition virtual window between labs. See the press release.

2007.04.12
All equipment has been received by the participating universities including the widescreen monitors. Installations are being scheduled to be completed by next week.

2007.03.22
Tracking numbers for the LifeSize equipment have been emailed to the participating universities. Six 37" widescreen monitors have been ordered, however, shipping details will be settled tomorrow.

2007.03.21
LifeSize has shipped the units to the participating universities. GBH will coordinate the installation of the units after which connectivity testing will begin. Press release planning is in the works.

2007.02.01
The list of participating universities has been finalized to
Carnegie Mellon University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Harvard University, MIT Media Lab, Stanford University, and University of Washington.

2006.09.28
The project is officially named ResearcHDiscovery, where research meets discovery in high definition.

2006.08.30
LifeSize equipment is demonstrated at University of Washington. The vision of the project is shared with Adam Moulden of LifeSize.

2004.02.18
kynamatrix Research Network is officially created with plans to initiate operations by June.

2004.01.23
Documented the vision of 2-way HD becoming a reality for research between the participating universities.

2003.03.01
We are investigating the use of utilizing a 3CCD video camera and a 55" HDTV. We're exploring how the technology might be used to communicate and share experiences in real time in a 2-way HD scenario and how this can aid in collaboration. We predict that this type of technology can assist in removing the barriers to innovation. It is in the space between two collaborators where new ideas are discovered.
