Communication

We seek to discover new methods of sharing information. As computers are becoming more ubiquitous, coincidently there is a growing need to make technology transparent and easier to use.

Overview
Our research investigates the intersection between intelligent entities
(person-to-person or person-to-machine) to seek the most effective interactive communication methods. This involves rethinking existing methods and seeking simplicity in alternative paradigms. We are asking these
fundamental questions:

-  How do we interact with one another in person?
-  How can we leverage the computer as a tool in these one-on-one situations?
-  How can we interact with one another remotely?
-  If we could redesign the computer, what would the ideal system be like?
-  How would we interact with one another through it?
-  What would be the ideal interface for such a system?

Initiatives
The following initiatives will enhance how we interact with each other:

ResearcHDiscovery
Through two-way high-definition communication, research meets discovery. As a proof-of-concept for collaborative one-on-one research using 2-way high definition, this high-profile project connects multiple leading universities in the United States and enables researchers to work and innovate in new ways.

KnowledgeShare   [definition phase]
We are investigating alternative paradigms for creating, manipulating, and sharing knowledge. We foresee integration of existing knowledge solutions such as forums, blogs, structured files, and email. We propose the construction of a prototype which is secure, transactional, and searchable.

PersonalAssist   [definition phase]
We all could use a little help with everyday tasks, automating repetitive tasks and allowing others to get answers to common questions. A personal assistant is needed to act as an intermediary between an individual and their world of captured knowledge. It can also serve as an avatar to answer common questions. We propose the construction of a prototype which interfaces to the KnowledgeShare and is, above all, obvious to use.
